Patricia’s Story

Loneliness and isolation have been a constant challenge for 76-year-old Patricia who lives in Thomastown.

Patricia’s son lives in Lalor with his family, and she also has a daughter raising her family in Queensland, she is determined to carve out a life which is filled with laughter, independence and purpose. While Patricia has several health issues including Diabetes Type 1 as well as waiting for a knee replacement, which limits some of her mobility, her tenacity to be independent is strong.

“It is always wonderful to hear and see my children and grandchildren as they carve out their lives, watching them blossom.  But I never want to be a burden on them and rely on them for my day-to-day needs.  I am passionate about staying independent and look forward to enjoying my time at home.”

Link’s role

Since 2017, LINK Community and Transport has played a pivotal role in coordinating Patricia’s transport needs for her hospital and medical appointments, as well as social outings. “With LINK, the volunteers are such a delight to deal with, especially the drivers.  I recently had some medical results which were not good, and my LINK driver was so caring and concerned about my welfare.  It was a genuine connection which I really remember on such a mediocre day.”

“I find that LINK is reliable, friendly, trustworthy and genuine in their care.  They go beyond the call of duty to make me feel worthy.  I feel I am always listened to by LINK, whether it is on the phone or with the volunteers.”

For Patricia, Morning Melodies and RSL lunches are activities she loves to participate in. “It is not only the lovely meals that I enjoy but catching up with familiar faces who share their stories with me. And sometimes, their stories and struggles are very similar to my own.   You feel you are not alone and that there is a sense of comradery between us – like a LINK family!”

During COVID, Patricia needed to go to Whittlesea to get her new dentures as local facilities were not able to assist.  LINK immediately jumped into action in order for Patricia to get the all-important dentures for her.  “This is just another example in the way LINK approaches their clients, not as numbers, but as people with needs.”

Patricia also recalls there have been a few times where her GP has recommended that she needs to go hospital without the need for an ambulance.  LINK is there every step of the way in getting to where she needs to go.

Moving forward

As a nurse attendant in a past job role, Patricia understands and appreciates the value of quality care and community support, with a genuine people-focused approach.

“LINK has so many qualities that celebrate grass-roots community compassion and support.  LINK is committed to being involved in my life, help me reignite my drive and maintain my independence. “My goals are simple in life, and LINK offers the guidance to help me achieve them.

“They have been a lifesaver for me.”
